Tips for Building a Lap Pool

A lap pool is like a miniature version of a regular swimming pool.  It is a perfect solution for someone who is limited in space, but who wants the fun of a swimming pool.  Traditionally, these pools are used for exercising, but they can also be designed for fun, too.

Initial Considerations

Some of the things you will want to consider first when thinking about installing a lap pool are:

  • What it will be used for.  You need to decide if it will be used for fun, just exercise or both.  There are different designs that allow for both fun and exercise or the standard design that can be used for either.
  • The space available.  You will need to make sure you have enough room, not only for the pool, but the surrounding area and room for construction.
  • The type of material.  You can get concrete or vinyl lap pools.

A Word About Dimensions

Lap pool dimensions are important.  You need to understand them so the pool will fit in your yard and so you can meet zoning requirements, if necessary.

You should first find out zoning regulations in your neighborhood and then go about designing your lap pool to fit within those regulations.

Additionally, you want to make sure the dimensions of your lap pool fit the intended use.  It will need to big enough to work for your needs.

Getting Started

After making some considerations you can begin to seriously get to work on building your lap pool.  You will start with the basic design.  This will incorporate the dimensions, style and type of lap pool you want.

Make sure to take good measurements.  Also look around for design ideas.  You do not have to go with a basic rectangle shape.  There are also 'L' shaped lap pools that allow for exercise and play all at one time.

Do not forget about the extra things you may need.  You will need stairs, so be sure to incorporate them into your design.  You may want extras, like exercise equipment and a lap pool counter.

You will also need to find a company to install your lap pool.  Make sure to thoroughly check out the company and shop around to compare prices before signing a contract.

Give Vinyl a Thought

If your budget is a bit tight then you may want to consider a vinyl lap pool.  They are much more inexpensive than other types and require no digging to install.  This can also be a great choice if you are facing problems with underground lines or zoning regulation issues.  A vinyl lap pool also takes far less time to install, so installation costs will be cheaper, as well.

Building a lap pool requires a little thought, but really is actually something that can be done quickly and at a far less expense than a full size swimming pool.  If you have limitations, either money or space, then considering a lap pool is something you should do.  It is a great solution for someone who wants a pool, but just can not install a full size swimming pool.
