Using a Propane Heater

Many people enjoy the economics of heating with natural gas, but do not have a gas line going into their home, or they seek to have a portable unit in a garage, workshop, or other areas that are not currently being heated by the home’s central heating system. Whatever your reasons are for purchasing a propane heater, keep in mind that you must look at all aspects of your purchase in order to make sure that you purchase the heater you need for the purpose intended.

For those who desire a gas-fired home heating system, but lack natural gas lines that are installed by the utility company, a propane heating system is the next best thing. In order to do this, a propane company must first install a propane tank on your property – much like you would have to install to operate an oil burner. The propane company will come to your house either when you call or on an automatic delivery schedule to fill your tank with propane. Using a propane heater allows those who do not have access to natural gas to enjoy the cleaner and more economical gas heat.

For areas that are unheated such as garages, workshops, and even enclosed porches and patios, a portable propane heater will take care of the problem. In addition, they are quite handy during the winter months during an electrical outage. If you’re considering using a propane model as a back up in case of a power outage, you must make sure that you choose one that does not require any electrical power – some portable gas and kerosene heaters still need electrical power because they have a fan to circulate the heat. However, a propane heater that requires no electricity is quite convenient for not only times when there is no power but for use in areas that do not have an electrical outlet.

The most important thing to remember when using such a heater, especially a portable heater, is to be certain not to place it too close to flammables such as blankets, paper, and clothing. When the heating elements become hot, anything too close to the unit stands a risk of igniting. Since the portable units have a visible flame, the potential for a fire are increased greatly. Purchase your propane heater with confidence, but use it with caution.
