How to Prevent a Damp Basement
A damp basement is the perfect environment for mold growth. Mold, which is green in color and resembles a powder, can be harmful to those who inhale it. A damp basement that is dark is the best place for mold to grow. Most basements will be cold since they are underground. But a damp basement feels not only chilly, but also uncomfortable to be in for a long period of time. One begins to feel clammy and cold. There are a few ways to prevent or at least keep the dampness to a minimum. Preventing dampness from ruining a basement can be very inexpensive. One way is to purchase a dehumidifier. This will keep moisture from settling on furniture, walls, and floors. A dehumidifier can sit in the corner of the room and make a real difference in a damp basement. Another way to combat a damp basement is to use a sealant that will keep water out of the basement. Water creates a damp feeling environment as it dries. It also creates an environment for mold growth. Preventing water from entering a basement will reduce the dampness. A third way to prevent a damp basement is to install lots of windows. Wind will help carry the dampness away. A door that can be opened is the best way to use wind and sunlight.
A damp basement will not be used often unless the dampness is taken care of. People should not be around mold for long periods of time. A damp basement can also cause wood to rot which could ruin a pool table, walls, and furniture over time. Taking care of this problem early is highly recommended. Once the dampness is gone, people will want to use the basement and it will again become a functional space in the home.
